Dual Wavelength Magic

What Is the Fraxel Laser Treatment?

Fraxel DUAL is a premier non-ablative laser system celebrated for its ability to transform skin from within. Fraxel is unique because it uses two complementary wavelengths - 1550 nm and 1927 nm - to address concerns at different depths of the skin. The 1927 nm wavelength works closer to the surface to improve sun damage, brown spots, uneven tone, and overall radiance, while the 1550 nm wavelength reaches deeper to stimulate collagen and improve fine lines, texture, enlarged pores, and skin surface irregularities, such as acne scars.

Fraxel delivers laser energy through a process called fractional photothermolysis. This means the laser creates thousands of microscopic treatment zones in the skin, treating only a fraction of the tissue while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This untreated skin acts as a natural powerhouse, sparking a rapid healing process that pushes out old, damaged skin cells and initiates robust new collagen production throughout the dermal layers.

Treatments can be customized using either wavelength individually or both together, allowing us to create a highly personalized resurfacing treatment based on your skin and your goals.

A Deeper Kind of Renewal

What to Expect During Your Fraxel Treatment

Your Fraxel experience begins with a thorough skin assessment and a customized treatment plan based on your concerns and goals. A topical numbing cream is applied 30 to 45 minutes before treatment to help minimize discomfort. Once the skin is prepared, internal or external eyeshields or protective goggles will be placed over the eyes to shield them from the laser energy. During treatment, the Fraxel handpiece is passed systematically across the skin, delivering precise microscopic columns of laser energy. You'll feel warmth and a prickling sensation, while integrated cooling helps keep you comfortable. For those who prefer an extra level of comfort, Pro-Nox is also available for an additonal fee from our Comfort Menu.

Most treatments take approximately 30 to 45 minutes once numbing is complete. Immediately afterward, the skin will feel warm and appear pink to red, similar to a sunburn. Over the next several days, mild swelling, dryness, and bronzing are expected as the skin begins its renewal process. We'll provide detailed aftercare instructions to support comfortable healing and beautiful results.

Targeted Transformation

What Areas Can Fraxel Laser Treat?

Fraxel isn't just for the face. This versatile resurfacing laser can also treat the neck, décolleté, back of hands, arms, and other areas of the body affected by sun damage, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, rough texture, enlarged pores, or acne scarring. Fraxel may also be used to improve the texture and appearance of surgical or traumatic scars on the body, helping them gradually appear less red, smoother, and less noticeable.

With two distinct wavelenths, Fraxel DUAL allows us to customize treatment for concerns at different depths. From restoring sun-damaged hands and décolleté to improving facial texture or softening scars, each treatment is thoughtfully tailored to the area, your skin, and the level of correction desired.

Where Correction Meets Refinement

What Skin Concerns Can Fraxel Treat?

Fraxel is most commonly used for facial rejuvenation, but it's also a popular choice for addressing crepey skin texture and sun damage on the neck and chest. Additionally, it can be used on surgical or traumatic scars on the body or areas with a heavy accumulation of dark spots and sun damage. This advanced laser is a highly effective treatment for a range of stubborn skin concerns:

  • Minimizes skin surface irregularities such as depressed or rolling acne scars and indented surgical scars
  • Visibly reduces moderate wrinkles, stubborn fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, and rough skin texture
  • Can minimize advanced pigmentation issues like melasma, sun damage, and age spots
  • Reduces appearance of enlarged pores
  • Restores a more youthful, plump overall appearance

Total Skin Refinement

What Are the Benefits of the Fraxel Laser?

Fraxel DUAL goes beyond simply brightening the skin. By creating thousands of microscopic treatment zones, it activates the skin's natural renewal process and stimulates new collagen, gradually replacing damaged skin with smoother, healthier looking tissue. The result is improved texture, tone, clarity, firmness, fine lines, pores, pigmentation, and appearance of acne or surgical scars.

One of Fraxel's greatest benefits it its ability to create meaningful correction while preserving a natural-looking result. Improvements continue to develop as collagen remodels in the weeks and months following treatment, making Fraxel an excellent choice for patients who want stronger, more transformative skin renewal without traditional fully ablative resurfacing.

Care Curated for You

Am I a Candidate for Fraxel Laser?

Laser skin resurfacing with Fraxel may be an excellent choice if you're looking for meaningful improvement in aging skin, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, fine lines, or in textural changes from acne or surgical scarring. Because of its dual wavelengths, we can adjust the settings to safely treat a wide range of skin types. The ideal treatment depends on your skin type, treatment area, degree of correction desired, and your ability to accommodate several days of recovery.

Beautiful laser results begin with choosing the right treatment for the right skin. We carefully evaluate your skin, medical history, medications, recent sun exposure, and treatment goals before recommending Fraxel. Certain skin types or conditions may benefit from a different approach, and patients with a history of cold sores may be prescribed preventative antiviral medication when appropriate. At Alchemy, thoughtful treatment selection is just as important as the treatment itself.

Results That Keep Getting Better

Fraxel Laser Recovery & Results

Recovery

The healing process after Fraxel treatment is predictable, although dedicated post-treatment care is required. Expect redness, warmth, and swelling similar to a deep sunburn immediately after your session. You can expect the redness and mild to moderate swelling to peak over the first two to three days, which is a normal sign that your body's remodeling process is underway.

On day three or four, the skin will turn a bronzed color and begin to feel dry and slightly rough, like fine sandpaper, as millions of old cells rise to the surface. This flaking will naturally shed away within about a week. Don't pick or peel the skin during this time - simply allow the dead skin cells to slough off naturally. Avoid all active skincare products, such as retinols for 7 to 14 days. Use only gentle cleansers, apply rich hydrators, and practice strict sun protection to safeguard your fresh, vulnerable tissue. Your provider will give you specific product recommendations and care tips to ensure a smooth, seamless recovery.

Results

Freshness and clarity begin to emerge as the initial healing phase resolves, usually 7 to 10 days after treatment. Your complexion will look brighter, fresher, and noticeably cleaner. Fraxel's real beauty, however, develops over time. As new collagen forms and the skin continues to remodel, texture becomes smoother, tone more even, and scars and fine lines may gradually soften.

While improvement can be seen after a single treatment, a series of 3 to 5 treatment sessions is often recommended for more significant correction, with results continuing to evolve for several months.

To protect and extend your results, we recommend medical-grade skincare, consistent daily sun protection, and annual maintenance treatments when appropriate. Think of Fraxel as part of a long-term investment in healthier, more resilient, beautifully maintained skin.

FAQs Fraxel Laser

While most patients notice a shift in their skin tone and surface clarity after just one treatment, resolving structural changes like deep acne scars or surgical scars generally requires an initial series of three to five sessions. Spacing these appointments roughly four to six weeks apart allows your tissue to rebuild new collagen and heal completely between visits. Your final improvements will continue to develop for up to six months after your last session.

You should allow your skin to rest completely bare for the first 24 hours after your session to allow the microscopic treatment channels to close safely. By the second day, you can safely apply a clean mineral makeup to help conceal the lingering redness and bronzing as you return to your normal daily activities. Be sure to apply it gently with clean brushes to avoid irritating the fresh skin cells underneath.

Swelling is a normal part of the healing process and is usually most noticeable around the eyes during the first two or three mornings after your session. To help reduce swelling quickly, we recommend sleeping with your head propped up on an extra pillow or two for the first few nights. You can also apply a cool compress or an ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth to the area for ten minutes at a time.

Yes, you can still safely undergo this treatment, but because the laser energy penetrates deeper into the dermal layers, it can occasionally trigger a viral flare-up in susceptible individuals. If you have a history of cold sores anywhere on your face, please inform our aesthetic team before your visit. We will gladly prescribe preventative antiviral medication for you to take before your appointment to lessen the risk of a cold sore breakout.

A standard photofacial uses intense pulsed light to target surface color issues like red vessels and superficial sun spots, but it cannot alter the physical structure of the skin. Fraxel is a true skin resurfacing laser that penetrates much deeper into the tissue to break up tough scar tissue, minimize deep lines, and shrink pore size. It provides a much more comprehensive solution for structural skin concerns.

No, the laser does not cause permanent thinning or sensitivity; in fact, it does the exact opposite. By stimulating robust new collagen production and cellular renewal in the dermal layers, the treatment actually increases the thickness, density, and natural resilience of your skin over time. Your skin will be temporarily sensitive to UV rays during the initial week of healing, but it will return to its stable baseline quickly.

You must pause all active anti-aging skincare products, such as retinols, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and vitamin C serums, for about a 7 to 14 days following your session. These powerful active ingredients can severely irritate your healing skin and disrupt the recovery process. You can safely return to your regular active routine once the rough, sandpaper texture has completely flaked off and your surface feels smooth again.

The fall and winter months are actually the absolute ideal time to schedule this laser treatment. Because your skin will be temporarily vulnerable to hyperpigmentation from UV rays during the healing process, it is much easier to avoid direct sun exposure and maintain proper post-treatment care when the days are shorter and sun exposure is naturally lower. However, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen remains essential year-round.
